The Fairmont Cardinals has been a powerful team amongst Class AA squads for the past 3 years. In each of those 3, Coach Jared Thompson’s squad had set new school records for most wins in a season. Last year was capped by a state tournament appearance, the first in 24 seasons for FHS.
The Cardinals season this year will stem on the abilities to fill 7 of the top 8 spots vacated due to graduation. Seeing the names Pfingsten, Eversman, or Ruen in the box scores is a thing of the past. Those guys will be missed, but Coach Thompson will work hard to find new players to continue the Cards on a successful path.
Ben Abel is the lone returnee with a lot of varsity minutes. Abel has become a capable scorer with work over the summer and will be looked upon as a leader too. Spencer Chirpich missed last season due to an injury will be back and is expected to contribute. 6’6 sophmore Walker Tordson could be a huge benefit to the Cards providing height and inside play. Seniors that were on the team last year will be counted upon for contributions this season too. Those guys are Nate Johnson, Parker Monson, & Derek Hunwardsen.
The team began to search for its new identity for this summer. Past seasons had the Cards being a great outside shooting team. This year they are a little stronger inside than out, but shooting outside effectively will open up the strengths they have inside further this season. This will be something the Cards will work on all season to improve upon. An effective defense will be something expected too.
Big South favorites before any games are played seem to be Marshall & Waseca. No one game is more important that the other, but there are still fun conference rivalry games vs Waseca & BEA. Section matchup games against JCC and MCW are on the schedule as well.
3 excellent coaching assistants, Chris Voss, Tyler Brackey, & Jonathon Olson, will be on board to help keep the Cardinal hoops program looking positive. It’s hopeful that by end of the season, that Fairmont is mentioned as one who’ll be competing for conference and section championships.
