Coach TJ Newgard is the new head GBB coach for the Luverne Cardinals this season. Newgard has been assistant coach the past two seasons and involved in the program since 2009. Last year’s Cards finished with a 8-17 overall record.
A very good summer of working together and good team chemistry are positive that Newgard takes with him knowingly into the first week of practice. The Cards return some quality outside players, which will be the team strength this season. SR Lexi Rust (8ppg), SR Tayla Peterson, & JR Morgan Haugen(10ppg) will be key components to the team success this season. Rust and Haugen have started the previous two seasons.
There is a younger mix of girls who’ll be vying for varsity minutes that can play multiple spots. A likely early season weakness will be the lack of depth due to varsity experience. The Cards will also lack an inside post presence early on.
The biggest rivalry for the Cards is right up Highway 75 where the Arrows of Pipestone reside. These two will get the season started at Luverne in the very first game. Games against Martin Co West and Fairmont during the regular season will provide a look at how they’ll match up vs top sub-section 3AA south opponents.
Top conference contenders for the Big South will be Class AAA school Marshall. Section favorites besides those mentioned earlier are Redwood Valley & TMB in the north half.
Speed, athleticism & team chemistry lead Coach Newgard to believe that they’ll able to translate into a few more wins this season. As with many teams across the state, how those younger players grow up during the season always sets the tone for March tournaments.
