Caught up in the hoopla of a girls Section 2AA dominated as of late by Carlie Jo Wagner and NRHEG, we tend to forget or not recognize there are other pretty decent girls squads in the Gopher Conference.
One such squad who is steadily improving and not talked about much is the W-E-M Buccaneers. You may remember in the Sub-Section 2AA final last season, it was the W-E-M squad who took the slow down approach vs the high powered NHREG squad and probably gave them their biggest scare of the season falling just 45-36 in a very methodical slow paced game ran by the Bucs.
Coach Gabe Hauer has been part of W-E-M hoops for the past 10 seasons. He’ll begin his 6th season as the head coach of the girls and looks forward to working with his young team following a very nice 18-10 season.
Returning letter winners who’ll be asked to provide the leadership and take control of some more scoring this year will be Tierney Winter & Erica Olson. Winter, a junior, is also a very good cross country runner placing 7th at State in 2013 meet. She was voted all-conference in hoops as well, so provides some great athleticism to work with. Olson, who was honorable mention all conference, will be looked upon to upgrade her scoring potential and rebounding.
Defense wins championships, and Coach Hauer will be looking to the Buc defense as being one of their main strengths this season. Half of the scoring from last season is gone, so building that back up with defense should be helpful in the transition for the newcomers. This will be a junior laden squad this season, so building for the future is definitely happening as well.
Top squads in the way of the Bucs in conference and sections will look the same again in seems. NHREG & Blooming Prairie are Gopher Conference teams to beat. In Section, add in the ladies from Norwood Young America as a north side favorite.
