Expectations for the Sleepy Eye girls this season are high! Just one senior graduated off of the varsity last year so many return after a 16-10 season. Coach Ryan Hulke has built quite an impressive program that only continues to get better in developing nice players.
Potentially this squad is looking at being 10-11 players deep at some point in the season if not right away. There are a lot of team goals including trying to break the school record for wins which is 19 right now. There is a lot of experience returning and a very nice group of freshmen will be counted on to contribute as only 8 girls in the program are in grades 10-12.
SR Justine Gonzalez (12ppg/3stls), JR Josie Schieffert(14ppg/11rpg/4blks), & SR McKayla Ahlrich (8ppg/6reb) supply quite a bit of the returning stats. These girls will be looked upon for consistency each time out. Two freshman had good stats as 8th graders last season. Madsion Heiderscheid & Sarah Ibarra both averaged over 5ppg.
Fans of this squad should be very excited to follow this team. The Tomahawk conference has a lot of talent. CMC, Springfield, & GFW all return some solid squads this year to contend for the title along with the Indians. Getting into the 2A Section teams, even more talent added with teams like LP/HT, Mankato Loyola, & United South Central as top squads.
An early game that Coach Hulke looks forward to is a matchup vs Minneota at SMSU over the Christmas Holidays on December 30th. Rebounding will be key in this one and all others this season as only 3 players are 5’10 or taller. It’s going to be a fun year for this team and equally fun to follow.
