Tim Staloch begins his 20th season as head coach with the Maple Lake Irish. He and his assistants Casey Pack & Brad Baumann have every right to be excited about the prospects of this season’s squad.
They return a trifecta of solid guards who will offer nothing but experience in the backcourt. David Stockman returns for his senior season after averaging 20.4 ppg. He’s had varsity minutes since his freshman and is a nice player. Fellow senior classmates Andrew Schonnesen brings back almost 12 ppg to the squad. Both of these guys shot over 45% from 3 point land last season. The third senior guard is Tony Goetz, a two year varsity member, who have good shooting abilities as well.
A set of 3 juniors will provide a lot of the team size this season, Brandon Borell, Chase Olson, & Nick Paumen are all over 6’3. They’ll need some developmental time offensive and with the opponents focusing on the guards early will give any of these 3 guys a time to shine if they perform.
Rockford, Pierz, & EVW are teams that the Irish love to play in the Central MN Conference. These guys along with Irish will fight for the league title. Section play is a little tougher right in their own sub-section, but Braham & St Cloud Cathedral pose a large task there. Overall section title options out of Section 5AA could be squads like Rockford, Watertown-Mayer or Breck.
Last season’s 12-13 record seems to be one that should easily be improved as long as defense and rebounding become a normalcy to this squad. Stokman is a name to remember and a good leader who’ll help give Maple Lake their most talented team since 2007-09 when they were section runners up.
