Coach Travis Carroll is now in his 3rd season as head coach of the Marshall Tigers and has taken his squad to State tournament in his first two. Carroll is assisted by Mike Christianson, Casey Sussenguth, & Dusty Koster.
Just four seniors were lost from last year’s 24-5 team, so expectations to get back to State again are not out of the question. Depth will be a huge advantage this season as potentially 11-13 kids could get into the game without much letdown depending on the circumstances. It will be great to have that talent depth to practice against as well.
Senior twins, Connor & Noah Winkelman are athletic kids, who’ll be looked upon for the consistent performances game after game. Connor is a very good outside shooter. Noah’s best trait is his defense, but can score when that is needed. A third Winkelman, Reece, is a 6’4 sophomore who is long and does whatever it is Coach Carroll needs him to. He does a lot of the little things that help the team win.
This year’s Tiger squad will be one of the tallest that they’ve had in many years, at least 7-8 kids standing 6’3 or taller. The play of 6’9 SR Jordan Schroeder along with 6’4 Sr Matt Pietz & 6’4 Jr Jacob Falconer will be crucial to the Tigers success. They’ll be looked to upon to use their physical abilities and rebound the basketball. They are all capable finishers in the paint offensively too. There are also some underclassmen bigs such as sophomore Weston Magrath that can and will step in as they get experience making them even tougher at season’s end.
Drew Hmielewski can jump out of the gym, he is the team’s best athlete, no question. Unfortunately, a torn labrum will keep Drew out for most if not all of this season. A huge loss, that several together will have to make up for. Nick Saugstad is another hustling blue collar kid, Thomas Fischer is quality floor general who has a lot of game smarts. 6’5 Mitchell Sueker is a sophomore who’ll probably garner varsity minutes too. 6’2 Jacob Deines, is another smart player vying for PT. Senior Brock Klaith is the ultimate team kid who’ll be pushing for PT & pushing his teammates to get better all season long.
The new Big South Conference is split into East and West divisions which are divided up into what is still all the Southwest Conference teams of old. Pipestone, Jackson County Central, & Redwood Valley will all be very good opponents & contenders. The Arrows and Huskies are probably sporting their strongest squads in a long time. Redwood Valley will be small again, but they still will be a good shooting squad. A potential East/West matchup with Waseca could happen on Feb 14th if both win their half of the conference.
Section play will see Hutchinson and Mankato West as the main contenders as well as the Tigers of Marshall. Good non conference scheduling always helps the Tigers come playoff time too. This team should not be slept on.
