The Redhawks are a team that has been to the State AA girls tournament 7 of the last 10 seasons. Last season was termed as a down year going in. All they girls did was finish 20-7, got a 3 seed in their section, & still made it to the state tournament again.
Josh Thurow has an impressive coaching record of 226-74 in his 11 years. He & assistants Scott School & JoAnn Venhuizen will be working with 10 returning varsity team members and newcomers to continue the team success.
The beginning of the year will provide a challenge as Junior Sara Kaminsky, last season’s Tri Metro Player of the year will be continuing to a recover from an ACL injury and won’t be ready to start the season. Others will need to pick up on the scoring, rebounding and leadership that she provides. Some of those players include senior players Lilly Thorney & Gracia Gilreath. Both were all conference last season in the Tri-Metro.
The Redhawks are now part of the new IMAC conference which also includes Providence Academy, Blake, Breck, Mounds Park, & St Paul Academy. Providence Academy has a lot of culture will be tough team to battle for the first new conference championship with. In section 4AA, teams like St Croix Lutheran, Concordia Academy, & Columbia Heights will have good teams looking to get to State as well.
Minnehaha Academy has been solid for several seasons and the future is bright. They have many players who drive to the basket with the ball & play Redhawk full court pressure defense. They’ll look to become a better outside shooting team and work was already in place on this in the offseason. It will be fun to follow Coach Thurow’s squad this season.
