John Bruns begins his 16th season as head coach of the Awesome Blossoms. This year he returns his top 5 scorers to the team and looks to develop depth from the new kids who’ll see action as the season moves forward.
John Rumpza enters his senior season already as the all-time leading scorer and rebounder at BPHS. Rumpza averaged a double-double (20.5ppg/12.6rpg) and will be looked upon for more of the same this year. Rumpza has been all-conference in the Gopher in each of this high school seasons.
Seniors Jacob Decker(8.8/3.4) & Scott Romeo(6.1/5.3) are starters coming back this season as well. Both of these kids will continue to work to be weapons, so the focus on Rumpza by opponents will lessen.
6’1 JR Anthony Nelson is well rounded player who plays well in all aspects of the game. 6’2 JR Mitchell Jones played mostly JV, but made his move mid-season and ended up getting into the varsity rotation doing well. John Hatch & Dawson Heuer are juniors who’ll vie for varsity time as newcomers.
In the Gopher Conference, USC and NHREG were co-champs and are the likely pre-season favorites. Maple River & WEM have talent back and are solid programs too. They’ll be battling along with the Blossoms for league title in a very competitive conference.
Coach Bruns sees Rushford-Peterson as the Section 1A favorite, but mentions Goodhue & Spring Grove as contenders. His Blossoms will have to remain healthy as their depth is limited compared to last season to be there as well.
Working on getting better on the defensive end & getting stops will be the main focus for this year’s Blossoms as an area they need to improve in. Reducing turnovers and taking care of the basketball will be important too.
This Blossom squad is extremely versatile and will offer matchup problems to some opponents. Coming off a successful state tournament football run can only help with the confidence and leadership for this group. They should be ready to work and have a very good season.
