Let's put it out there right away. I LOVE basketball. I am going to be kind of annoying to a lot of people in the months ahead. I am going to do all I can to be the main person who can give you what you are looking for in basketball information in Minnesota. Will I be able to do it? Doubtful, but if I can manage some help from all of you who like what I do and bring to the table, then yes WE can.
I'm the type of person who always wants to do way much more than I have time for. I'm going to take the time and let you know of all the things I will do and also what I hope to do for each "segment" of the team, school, & community you play for.
First I will start off with what I most certainly plan on doing and you can look forward to. I'll have you know up front, I am quite anal about getting my information out as live as possible. Once 24 hours has passed, I only have time to look ahead to the next night.
1. I will be doing a Game of the Day. I will try to preview one boys or girls game each day. I also hope to follow up on them with a small re-cap on this site. There will likely be a section added to this site so that you can refer to it when I tweet the link. I am going to try and develop a short and simple survey that hopefully a coach will fill out for me prior. Not overly optimistic it will go as planned, but I am going to try. I will focus this on out state games 95% of the time.
2. There will be game stats posted. I usually use #gamestats on Twitter. I'll point out some solid performances that kids & teams had on a certain night. I am concerned this will not be as effective as last season. Newspapers are not adequately staffed to put out everything that I'd like to see, nor do many offer up their opponents box score anymore in some papers. I wish that would change, but won't hold my breath.
3. Last year people were awful nice to include me in their reporting of scores from there games. Whether in progress or final scores. You bet I want to know how you are all doing.
4. The MN Buckets People's Poll will be my ranking format for this season. It will not be a weekly poll until January. This is a cool poll I started that includes 49 anonymous voters to all but me from across the state for boys and 35 voters for girls. Our first boys one is out and the girls will be coming out this Sunday. Despite a few hecklers & jokesters, who you can never satisfy, I'd say our group did well. I promise we'll get better too!
These three things, plus my continued following of any of our MN natives (#mnballers) playing college hoops across the land, anything basketball related that I think my followers would enjoy or want to be aware of will be shared.
I'd now like to address each group of people who I would like to network with this season and offer up what I would kindly ask of whoever is willing to help out a basketball junkie.
Coaches:
First thanks to those who took time to help me out with the pre-season previews. They were very fun to do and I am glad I was able to learn about and share a little bit too with anyone interesed.
Now that the season is near, in a perfect world, this is what I hope you would consider.
1. Take a look at the SportsNgin email sent to coaching staffs last Friday and then what you'll receive this week. This group will populate the MN BB Hubs for you this season, if you give them a chance and what you need. They have a team page for each of you where your local and regional newspaper RSS Feeds can settle. A one stop shop for anyone who wants to see how you are doing. Remember this is not just meant for Metro only, the just currently are the ones mainly taking advantage of it. As an outstate guy, I would love to be able to have our data right in there with the others. I have an in with the marketing manager at SportsNgin who handles this and am 100% on board with helping you in any shape or form with it if need be.
2. If you know of a different way, that I can tap into your team information and share data with that from others, feel free to email me at mnbuckets@gmail.com I promise I will not be someone who gives out data that will hurt your team in any shape or form.
Girls Basketball Players
I put you first because honestly I have not given you the coverage that I think you deserve that past few seasons. Yes, there are others who do well in getting your names out to the public after a successful night in the gym. I want to help that group promote your game better. Minnesota GBB is one of the most up and coming states with loads of great hoop talent. Out of habit, I sometimes take off with boys information so much easier than yours, because I am a little bit more knowledgeable about their programs. You have my promise though that this year you'll see an improved MN Buckets with GBB info. Don't be afraid to call me out if I am slacking!
Boys Basketball Players
I try really hard to make each and every one of you look good when I tweet about or mention you. If I lived in each of your cities, I'd likely be one of the best fans if not your biggest fan aside from your own family. You guys are normally my toughest audience out of everyone. I will do all I can to promote you and your teams in a positive way all season. It's exciting you've finally all made it back onto the practice court by now. High school hoops will be one of your most favorite memories. Enjoy it while it lasts!
Media
I want to work with you. I want to be helpful to you and ask you do your best to reciprocate that to me. I am open to any ideas that you want to swing past me. I did 2 radio interviews last year, I'd love to do more this year and talk hoops. Sportswriters, you guys are awesome, I hope what I offer sometimes helps with what you do like it has helped me in years past. Let's make this a fun season
Parents
Thanks to those of you who have become friends, just because we love the game like we do. I have a lot of player's mothers following me. I am sure it was probably to keep an eye on me at first, but hopefully I've gained your trust. Dad's have been awesome and helpful as well. I was fortunate to meet a few this summer. Naturally, if you are at a game, want to share a score, or lead me to a place where an app is being used with scoring updates that would be awesome.
Student Sections & Fans
It was awesome to tweet out photos of all of you going crazy at tournament time last season. It seems that has caught on and not become kind of a normal scene by others who tweet. I have decided to one up them with a Student Section of the week award. I'll be waiting for tweeted photos of how crazy you'll be for your school and classmates who hoop.
There you have it! Yep, I likely have come across as a very strange bird to many of you. Not many love basketball more than me! I used to do this just to learn for myself, but over the past couple years started to feel the need to share with you. I hope I made you know a little bit more about what's happening in the MN Hoops circles that you didn't before.
Thanks Again!
