It will be the third season at Cathedral HS for head coach Matt Meyer(45-13). Coach Meyer has been part of Crusader basketball for 10+ years and is very aware that this year’s team has potential to be pretty special.
Brindley Theisen returns for his senior season after averaging over 20ppg the past two seasons. Theissen is much more than just a scorer though and will be a real nice piece to the Crusader puzzle this season. He is just one of 11 seniors who’ll be on the squad this year.
Seniors Mike O’Hagen, Tom Burt, Isaa Heying, & John Peschel have all been on varsity since sophomore year at Cathedral. Burt and Heying were hurt in the same game last December and were lost for the season. SR Jake Spainol returns as well after being out his JR hoop season due to a football knee injury. Bryant Bohlig, a SR, sat out last season due to transfer rules. He was a starter at St Cloud Tech his sophomore year, so adds a lot of experience to an already experienced squad.
The Crusaders finished 23-6 last season. Losing PG Steven Neutzling & Brady Schmit will be holes to fill as they presented much of the uptempo team speed play incorporated last year. There may be a slowdown to that high pace and more of a focus on defense with this bunch. Key is to remain healthy as you have read, their team had some tough luck last year & a few more past years.
A tough non-conference schedule will always prepare a team for tournament time. Such teams as any of the other St Cloud schools, NLS, & Melrose will be good tests. A potential matchup vs Braham, Watertown-Mayer, Litchfield, or Mandan ND always looms at their home Christmas tourney.
A sub-section rematch with a good Annandale team could happen again, but this year’s Crusaders will focus on the regular season first and worry about the tournaments when the time gets closer. Central MN should get out and enjoy a Brindley Theissen performance some time, he is one of the best in that area of the state. He’ll be sure to include his teammates in his successes, which could be huge if all the stars are aligned.
