Coach Fred Kindschy (301-201) is the head girls coach at Hayfield High School. Despite losing three starters including Dani Wagner, who was leading scorer and rebounder last 3 seasons, & two of the fastest players Kindschy has ever coached in Jessie Foster & Rachel Masching, optimism for a good season is high.
Seniors Johanna Bungum (12ppg) and Bhrett Zahnle(11pg) return as starters & leaders which will be important this season. Both of these young ladies were teammates on a summer AAU squads, so have a real good feel for what the other one does. Other returnees with varsity experience include Rachael Ausrud, Savanna Cordle, & Jackie Sanvick. Underlassmen Sophia Waldner(SO) & 3 freshmen Kate Kruger, Maggie Streightiff, & Carrie Rutledge add talent and depth to this years team
Last season ended with a close subsection 60-58 championship game loss to Kenyon-Wanamingo. The Lady Vikings finished 21-6 overall. The team this year will be switching from the HVL Gold to the HVL Blue Divison which will create new rivalries.
Hayfield will be a very quick, play solid defense and be able to shoot the 3-ball effectively when the first whistles of practice blow. Rebounding and scoring in the paint will be weaknesses initially, but practices will definitely be focusing on these.
HVL play is tough no matter which color you happen to be in. A few big games early would be a game at P-E-M who was section finalist last year and returns a solid cast. A rematch against Kenyon-Wanamingo looms early in the season as well. Hayfield has a very strong schedule further in the season too facing the likes of Goodhue, Kasson –Mantorville, NHREG, Blooming Prairie & Chatfield. Southeast MN hoops has such a large amount of girls basketball talent.
Coach Kindschy sees this group as being capable to be one of the best teams in the conference with a shot a being a in the HVL Conference finals. K-M is an awful strong team in the Blue Division that will have a say about that as favorite. Dover-Eyota is likely a sub-section favorite for post season. The Vikings will be shooting for a top 3 seed.
From 7th grade through varsity last season, all teams combined for a 105-13 record, so the writing is on the wall that Hayfield Lady Vikings hoops is going to be around contending for conference and section championships for years to come.
