What a memorable season it was last year for Coach Jon Hanson & his Lancer squad. The Class A Coach of the Year will begin his 8th season as head coach and this season’s team looks to have similar successes to last year.
Despite the loss of a very good veteran player in Michael Slaba, who carried the Lancers a few times last season, this group returning has a lot of talent. PG McKinley Johansen returns, and will be the floor general , with the benefit of having several big strong inside players on his side.
Zach Nuy, Kristian Leppke, & Josh Gallegos are kids who are solid and have more than enough experience and drive to lead the Lancers to another great year. Any one of these guys can go off on a certain evening, which is a huge plus. These guys are also excellent leaders and team first players. Outside shooting and midrange game play will be things these kids will get better at.
6’9 Nick Prokop returns as well, this guy got experience in playoff time due to an injury to Nuy, and came through with flying colors helping his team get to state by doing a lot of the little things you don’t notice unless you’re there watching him. The Canby bench will need to fill roles and ramp up their play to keep consistency on the court especially at the guard position.
Stepping up on defense and maintaining focus will be the biggest thing this group will need to work on. There are teams in their conference and section that are good enough to put a loss in the Lancers column. Dawson-Boyd & Central MN Christian look to be Camden conference North favorites, the Lancers will battle for the South title with TMB & potentially Minneota, who are both AA schools. Their North opponents along with Southwest MN Christian will be main section title foes.
There will be times this year when the Lancers will have 4 kids on the floor 6’4 or taller and will try to dominate with strong inside play. This group has plenty returning and no knows just what it takes to get to the State tournament. That will be their goal once again this season.
