I always tell people that something is in the water at Perham. All sorts of awesome athletes across many sports and their teams always do well too. The Yellowjacket girls hoops squad obviously caught wind of that secret nectar and improved their win total by 10 game last season, going from 2 wins to 12!
Coach TJ Super thinks there is more good things to come from this squad this season. Two consistent players from last season are gone, but putting a lot of time in this summer has helped the returners & newcomers gel quickly. Expectations are growing, shooting from the outside will be a key this season.
Play on the inside, on both ends of the floor, is truly the strength to start the season. The outside players are all very good at putting the ball into the hands of the post. Senior Brittany Miller is the point guard who’ll be the taking care of the offense and running the show.
Maria Rutten is a 5’9 junior whose name you may see in the newspapers quite often this season. She is an excellent all around ball player. This season, she’ll be asked to lead and score a little more than in the past seasons.
Junior Ella Von Ruden at 5’11 was a bench player last season, but was found to be quite accurate from the field shooting over 60% and becoming a shot blocker. Now likely headed for even more playing time this season, it would be beneficial if she brings that type of game and fills that post role in a strong way.
Sydney Roberts is your blue collar worker who’ll be a spark plug by doing a lot of the little things like drawing charges & being intense. Senior Carolynn Baardsen will also provide inside depth with strong rebounding skills.
As stated earlier, shooting outside accurately will be vital and kids like Michaela Sondag, Amy Scheidecker, & Josie Beachy will have an opportunity to contribute in that way.
The Heart O' Lakes will be a strong girls conference this season, many of the non-conference teams the squads will play are also elite in their own leagues. Northwest Minnesota is a hotbed for GBB talent right now. It would be wise to follow that action if you have not in the past assuming you are a basketball fan.
