Matt Halverson returns to Goodhue HS for his 2nd year as head coach. Last season’s 19-11 was marred with some early season growing pains with the new systems, but a strong end of season finish led the Wildcats all the way to the Section finals where they fell to Rushford-Peterson.
Confidence is in the air for the this program, they return 2 of 3 top scorers and the second rated Class A defense in points allowed(46.2). The Wildcats will look to replace their guards from last season who were awful steady as the season went on. Returning kids who are expected to continue to build the program are Tyler Schumacher, Riley Augustine(who’ll be out first half of season due to knee injury), & Isaiah Hinsch (SRS). Underclassmen expected to fill roles include juniors Sam McNamara, Calvin Peterson, & Jacob Pasch. Sophomore Jacob McNamara will also be looked upon to possibly contribute.
Hiawatha Valley League is always a fun conference to be involved in as so many rivalries are in place. Goodhue is part of the Blue division and looks to be a main contender for that half along with Hayfield early on. A regular season game vs section foe Blooming Prairie is on the slate, as is an opportunity to be part of the Rochester Rotary Classic. There is also a regular season chance to battle with the team most favor to come out of Section 1A again this season Rushford-Peterson in February.
There will not be as much as a learning curve as the season begins having been in the Coach Halverson system for a year. Assistant coaches Mark Opsahl and Robby Ebner are guys who’ll be helping make Goodhue basketball competitive for years to come.
