Dustin Carlson begins his third season as head coach of the Willmar Cardinals girls program. His squad finished 14-14 last season. Carlson & his assistants Wade Adamson, Emily Carson, & Alex Lippert are looking to improve upon that record this season.
A solid core of players return and the Cards will feature both inside and outside presences to make a 20 win season possible. SR guard Courtney Magnuson is a three year starter that has good skills around the perimeter and driving to the rim. She’ll be the leader of this squad again this season. Two other teammates return with two years starting experience. Leah Ruter plays shooting guard or small forward most of the time and can shoot from anywhere on the court. Kaitlynn Kienholz maintained the post position a lot of the past 2 years & benefits from the driving abilities of the guards with nice passes for bunnies. 6’4 Lexi Orlowsky is another who’ll benefit from the excellent guard play.
Coach Carlson will need to find other players beyond his starting five to contribute quickly. In the Central Lakes Conference, the Cards are in the top 3 along with St Cloud Tech & Alexandria. The Section favorites are Hutchinson and Marshall. A hopeful early goal would be an opportunity to potentially get into the section title game against one of these two teams.
A solid inside/outside combination will be something many teams don’t have in the state. The Cards will do their best to take advantage of setting the tone of the games playing their style of hoops night in and night out. Should they be able to achieve that, they’ll have a very nice season.
