Travis Turgeon and his assistant Mitch Gracik are both in their second season coaching the Isle High School team. In their intial season together, the coaches & players put together a 13-14 season record.
This year’s team looks to be competitive in conference & in the section. Coach Turgeon returns a veteran 3rd year started in Trevor Oswald, who averaged 19.5ppg last season. Josh Zimpel played several minutes as an 8th grader putting in 5.5 ppg. He will play a much bigger role this season.
A couple of other kids who had limited varsity minutes off the bench last year expected to contribute are Jared Zimpel & Travis Eye. JV players Korey Shimer & Blake Zortman are names amongst several other hopeful contributors mentioned as kids who’ll be looked upon for good minutes.
Isle has a huge rivalry with conference foe each season with Onamia. There are always two games a year, but sometimes three. It’s nice to have bragging rights in that one. Braham has dominated the Great River Conference for several seasons and is the favorite again this year. Coach Turgeon marks Upsala as the Section 5A favorite, but a couple of other teams certainly have their opportunities as well.
Leadership is needed from the older players. The younger kids will have a lot of learning to do as a few could get unexpected big minutes. Isle will be good on the defensive end, but getting more kids to score will be important. Oswald potentially could become Isle’s all-time leading scorer this season, but having a successful team season would be far more important to him.
