Lake City brings back a formidable squad from last years 16-10 team. Head Coach Greg Berge (126-77) along with his assistants Kirk Thornton & Trevor Narnum are expecting this to be a very fun team & season to be part of.
Three starters return and all are juniors. Brady Kuchinka (19ppg/3rpg) missed half of last year with a broken leg. He is a very special player who makes the rest of the guys around him better. He’s a consummate team player & one of the better talents in SE Minnesota. Jesse Oliver (11.2ppg) is a serious three-point threat who shot over 40% last season. Eli Custer (6.3ppg/7.5rpg) is the leading rebounder returning who does a lot of the blue collar things the Tigers look for.
This year’s team will have excellent quickness and be a good shooting squad. The Tigers will not be a large sized team, but will be able to play physical yet. Staying healthy, good rebounding, & great defense are going to be the difference maker for this squad. That will be the challenge to remain consistent in.
The Hiawatha Valley League was restructured this season and so the Tigers are in the Gold Division with the likes of Byron, Cannon Falls, Stewartville, Rochester Lourdes, & Kasson-Mantorville. This will be a very competitive division with no clear cut favorite. Last year’s section 2AA champion Caledonia looms as a potential opponent to defeat & get out of section play.
There is a lot of potential for this to be a special season at LCHS. Having Kuchinka healthy & on board all year playing well could vault this squad to a possible state tourney entrant.
