It was a very solid 24-5 season for Cloquet last season. Despite losing a very solid group of seniors from last season’s state tournament team, Coach Steve Battaglia believes his squad can be in the mix again this year.
Battaglia enters his 10th season coaching is assisted by Tom Brenner, Dave Battaglia& Jack Hagen. Ironically these assistants were Battaglia’s coaches when he played for the Lumberjacks and led them to two state tourneys. Needless to say, a great bunch of basketball minds on the bench for the team to take advantage of.
Nate Weets is the returning floor general, who’ll be starting for the 4th straight season. This is a nice piece to have in place. Zach Gerlach also has plenty of experience. Shooting guard Mason Brenner will be responsible to ramp up his game a little more this year for the team to be successful.
Rivalry games each year include the local rivalry game vs Esko, but also there is the conference and section foe Hermantown that everyone looks forward to. Lake Superior Conference favorites this season lean towards Superior & Hermantown. It’s hopeful the Lumberjacks grow up enough early to be in the mix as well.
Looking at Section 7AAA this season, Chisago Lakes & Hermantown are the early favorites. Naturally Cloquet wants to be in the mix here too.
This team will lack size which is total different from last season when Colorado Mines recruit Adam Laine roamed the inside and dominated. There is good experience in some pretty important spots that potentially can override the small stature.
