The Breckenridge Cowboys finished the 2013-14 campaign with at 12-14 overall record and a respectable 5-7 mark in the very tough HOL conference last season. Coach Tyler Bormann in his 3rd year at the helm brings back a lot of the size he had last season. Assistant coaches Tony Bogenreif and Dick Cordes will lead the younger programs this season.
Recent MN-Crookston commit Nate Lorenz brings back a double double average of 16 & 10. He is likely on his way to becoming the Cowboys all-time leading scorer. He already is the all-time leading rebounder. His number will be called upon often to lead this younger Cowboy squad. Teammate Nate Blaufuss brings back 8ppg & 4.5 rpg. He’ll be another player with extra duties on the court this season.
Rebounding and defense are foundation of this squad. The Cowboys have been the conference leaders several categories pertaining to these strengths. It’ll be a focus this year too out of necessity.
Rivalry games each season include Barnesville& Hawley from within the conference. There is a nice rivalry with Morris along with the border battle with Wahpeton HS just across state lines. Coach Bormann feels the road to the HOL title likely goes through Hawley this season. Perham is also a conference squad to watch out for.
Section 8AA play is stout as always. Besides the teams mentioned in the conference, Crosby-Ironton and Crookston are mentions out of the 8AA North.
This year’s squad will be looking for some depth and perimeter scoring. If someone can step up with an accurate outside shot, that will open up things on the inside for Lorenz to operate more freely. That will lead the Cowboys to a successful season.
