It was a season to remember in St James this past season with a 21-6 final record. The Saints knocked off & pushed some big dogs last season happened with wins over Waseca and close losses to Fairmont. It excited many fans in town and at school. They made it to the state rankings briefly as well. Long time coach Steve Walker begins his 23rd season as head coach at St James and 27th overall. His career record currently stands at 308-308.
Jordan Sandmeyer is the only returning player from the 10 guys who played a lot last year. He averaged 8ppg/8rpg and will be another one of those kids who’ll be asked to step up and provide more this season. Newcomers may lack experience this year, but they did practice against very good competition all last season, so that likely will count for something. Coach Walker feels confident that the kids will have also benefited from their JV or B squad action that will assist.
Rival games vs Mountain Lake Area & Martin Co West are ones that always matter to the Saints. Conference foes that have calendar markings already are the games vs New Ulm & Fairmont. Fairmont and Waseca are teams Coach Walker names a Big South East half contenders this season.
Setcion 3AA South is always tough & this year will be even stronger. The Saints will have to improve immensely to be put in the same group of favorites such as JCC, Pipestone & Fairmont.
When you lose four & three year starters who both had 1000 pts & are now off playing in college, that makes for some pretty big shoes to fill for a squad. Last year’s confidence level though is residual and these Saints will be out to continue to be competitive and make some tournament time noise.
