Carl Williams is the new head coach at Deer River this season. Williams will be joined Phil Johnson, who has some familiarity with the kids in the program being on the staff the last 3 seasons. These two hope to work with a large group of returnees and improve on last season’s 5-20 mark.
The team this year will be young, but 8 of the kids back have some starting experience at one point or another last season. 2 others return as well with hopes to contribute more. Kole Schultz, a 6’3 senior, returns an average of 15ppg. Junior Aaron Drotts returns 12ppg, so a couple good pieces are in place for the other guys to blend in with. Senior Ben Eby & junior Cody Shevich are kids who played a lot of minutes last season as well.
More kids contributed and are ready to make their own noise for the personal good of the team. Those kids are: Danny Martin 6’2 SR; Iain Belgrade 5’9 SR; Eugene Jenkins 5’7 SR; Seth Fairbanks 5’10 JR; Todd Tibbets 6’1 JR; & Travis Cloud 5’7 SO. A couple of these kids were part of the 16 win JV squad last year. Experience from that is expected to be carried over to varsity this year.
Games against arch rival Bigfork are always where the team record can be tossed out the window. Greenway is another rival it doesn’t take the kids much to get up for. This squad is looking to make it to the middle of the pack at minimum in conference & sections, but definitely will shoot for higher goals.
This squad likes to get in the gym almost any time they can. Coach Williams is energetic and optimistic about the possibilities his kids can achieve this season and in the future.
