Mike Ogorek will begin his 2nd season as the head coach of Coon Rapids. Coach Ogorek is working hard to bring in a new much needed culture change for this program. Some kids didn’t adapt well to the changes & left the program. It left the Cardinals with a very young group, but did help the culture be changed to where it had hoped to be headed.
Coon Rapids finished 1-26 last year, but there is a lot of positives heading into this year. One goal is to get a conference win and end the 41 game NW Suburban losing streak that has been draped over the program. A deeper squad with a lot of kids making good strides over the summer makes the Cardinals feel this will be the year to get that monkey off their back.
Seniors Payton Foy & Tim Nguyen are back and will provide the leadership to the young team. A couple of sophomores return and have the most varsity action of all the returners. Sam Carver and Marcus Rask are guys who’ll have to be showing their classmates and teammates how to have composure and compete at the varsity level.
Games against Blaine, Anoka, & Spring Lake Park are just a few that the Cards always have marked on their calendars. Champlin Park is the clear cut early favorite to rule the conference on the Coon Rapids side. Maple Grove is a headliner on the other side. Section 7AAAA again is wide open . Cambridge-Isanti is a favorite, with Andover lurking ever so close.
It’s good to see a coach have enthusiasm to build a program and despite being youthful, it allows more open minded kids who’ll buy into what is best for them.
