What a season it was for the Waconia girls hoop program. They probably did not get to the goals for overall season record (10-16) they set, but state hoop scoring records they did set! While those state records are nice, this year’s team coached by Carl Pierson, in his 4th season at Waconia, wants to see some trophies make their school shelves.
The “Fun & Gun” offense was employed by the Coach Pierson & coaching staff Dusty Neibauer, Anna Philip, & Nelia Van Glan. It produced 4 state records & 3 state game records last year. Most of the had to do with 3 point attempts or total points scored.
There have been a few alterations to the offense this season that many in Wildcat land are likely very excited to see. Anna Schmidt, who was night in and night out , the leading scorer, brings back a 29 ppg average. Madeline Dammann, another returnee put in 12ppg. A couple other team members are valuable and will be expected to fulfill their roles this season and they are Kendall Eder & Emily Anderson.
Waconia plays in the Wright County Conference and most of those same teams share state tourney aspirations. In fact, in the WCC East, 5 squads potentially could make the state tourney and represent the conference well. Orono, New Prague, & Delano are early conference favorites.
Section 6AAA has about 4 teams who can win it and then a couple others just a hair behind that each squad has to be on the lookout for. Holy Family, Washburn, Benilde, & the Warriors are the top 4. Holy Angels & Richfield just a little bit behind.
The Waconia GBB program has never taken part in a State tournament. Coach Pierson would like to have this squad see that opportunity this year.
