Tim Ellefson returns for year 2 as head coach of the Hutchinson Tigers program. He’ll be bringing back a lot of talented girls this season and looks to be a contender for all titles this season.
Hutch finished 18-10 last season & will continue to build on their successes from then with upgrading an already strong pressure defense. The pressure D bit the Tigers from time to time last year due to some foul issues, so that is an early concern of letting teams get to the line too early in the game. Another year in the system will hopefully eliminate that some.
There is a lot of talent across all grades for the Tigers that will contribute on varsity this year. One big loss though, is to SR post player 6’2 Grace Bordson who had ACL surgery in August. It is hopeful she’ll be back in the Black & Gold before season’s end. Nicole Schommer (SR) will be looked upon to run the point guard position. She’s quick and is a good pick & roll player. Four other senior girls will play roles on a deep Tiger team as well: Traci Schwantes, Hannah Max, Allie Einck, & Ireland Szymanski.
Juniors Erin Corrigan & Erica Ellefson lead a core of junior girls who’ll contribute this season. Corrigan is going to be looked upon to be a main scorer this season. She’s also a great defender. Ellefson missed some time last year due to injury, but started 15 games, can play inside or out and defends the interior well.
Sophomore Tori Wortz started as a freshman last season and is one of the more well rounded players on the team. She’s an excellent one on one defender and the team’s strongest ball handler. Freshman Kenzie Rensch is a promising player who’ll be asked to contribute to this year’s varsity as well.
Hutch hopes to be a Wright County Conference contender this season along with the likes of Delano & Orono. Section 2AAA is another place the Tigers will look to make noise and Coach Ellefson sees his squad as a squad very close behind early favored Marshall. Hutch & Marshall face off in the season opener this year.
On paper this looks like a squad that will fill up the scoring column, cause a lot of turnovers, & win a lot of games with a really nice blend of talent. Basketball is a sport on the rise in Hutchinson, no question.
